Charlene P. Mills is a third generation native of Washington, DC. She discovered that she had artistic abilities while in an elementary school art class. Along with the elementary school art classes, she also enrolled in the Corcoran Gallery of Art program, as well as other District of Columbia art classes. In these programs, Charlene studied drawing and painting. Under the instruction of her mother, Charlene also learned to sew and quilt, crochet and embroidery.
Charlene selected and was accepted into the visual arts program at Duke Ellington School of the Arts, continuing her studies in the fine arts. In the eleventh grade, a greater interest in textiles was sparked. The visual arts students were asked to create oversized toys for a Christmas display. Charlene chose to create an oversized soft sculptured doll.
After graduation from high school, she enrolled in the college transfer program at Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC). As a fine arts major, she learned how combine her love of fabrics with artwork.
With encouragement from Michael Godfrey, a CPCC professor, Charlene applied for admission to East Carolina University (ECU). She is a 2001 undergraduate of ECU with a degree in Fine Arts with a concentration in Fabric Design.
Charlene has taken an eleventh grade project and the quilting skills that she learned from her mother even further. She has created soft sculptured dolls with human features and personalities of their own. Charlene now concentrates on creating hand dyed fabric quilts, pillows and other items.
